Iron and Wine (Sam Beam)

2020

Sam still writing, recording, and performing music—this year joining forces with Calexico on the “Years to Burn” album. I’m going to have to ask him for that recipe he promised 17 years ago!

2003

Iron and Wine is the solo project of Sam Beam, who writes, performs, and produces music in his home in Miami, Florida. The songs are crafted of sparse acoustic guitar and banjo and capped off with brilliant, thought-provoking lyrics. The effect is both soothing and haunting. Iron and Wine earned a slot in the roster of what I like to call “the kinder, gentler” Sub Pop Records. Sam usually tours with a whole band that does a great job capturing the essence of his melodies in a live performance.

About the interview

This interview took place during the SXSW Music Festival in 2003. Once again, a hastily-grabbed interview outside the club resulted in poor lighting and sound, but it was the best we could do.
